Other Benign Renal Tumors

Renal cyst:

See also renal cysts.

Papillary renal adenoma:

Papillary renal adenomas are small, unencapsulated tumors with papillary or tubular architecture and low-grade tumor cells. By definition, they measure less than 1.5 cm. Renal adenomas are found in 7–20 % of autopsies. Because distinguishing a renal adenoma from well-differentiated papillary renal cell carcinoma can be difficult, tumor size is used as a defining criterion.

Metanephric adenoma:

Metanephric adenoma is a rare benign epithelial renal tumor with histology similar to that of Wilms tumor and papillary renal cell carcinoma.

Multiloculated cystic nephroma:

Multiloculated cystic nephroma is a benign cystic renal tumor that imaging cannot reliably distinguish from cystic renal cell carcinoma or, in children, cystic Wilms tumor.

Mesenchymal tumors:

These benign tumors originate from mesenchymal tissue. Imaging often cannot distinguish them from malignant tumors such as sarcomas or renal cell carcinoma. Histologic examples include leiomyoma, fibroma, lipoma, neurofibroma, hemangioma, angioma, and rhabdomyoma.

Erdheim-Chester disease:

Erdheim-Chester disease is a rare histiocytosis that affects the long bones and can also infiltrate the renal fat capsule and other organs, including the orbit, brain, lungs, heart, and skin. CT typically shows a “hairy kidney”: strand-like infiltrates of the renal fat capsule that can completely encase the kidneys. When hydronephrosis is present, a double-J ureteral stent is required. Treatment includes interferon, glucocorticoids, and chemotherapeutic agents.
