Epidermoid Cyst of the Testis

Epidermoid cyst of the testis is a benign encapsulated testicular tumor, which is composed of epidermal cells.

Epidemiology

1% of testicular tumors are epidermoid cysts.

Etiology of Epidermoid Cysts of the Testis

Epidermoid cysts of the testis are caused by scattered epidermal cells. Alternatively, a teratoma with exclusive epidermal differentiation is possible.

Pathology of Epidermoid Cysts of the Testis

Epidermoid cysts of the testis are sharply circumscribed gray-white to yellowish encapsulated benign tumors of the testis. The tumor capsule consists of connective tissue with a keratinizing squamous epithelium. The rest of the tumor is an amorphous mass.

Diagnosis

Ultrasound of the testis reveals a sharply defined echogenic tumor.

Treatment

Inguinal incision and exposure of the testis: depending on size and preoperative suspicion for a benign tumor, either organ-preserving resection with frozen sections (Heidenreich et al., 1995) or radical orchiectomy is done.
