Bartholin Cyst and Bartholinitis

The blocking of a Bartholin gland may lead to a bacterial cyst. Bacterial inflammation of the Bartholin glands or cyst produces an empyema.

Etiology of Bartholinitis

Bacterial infection with Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Chlamydia trachomatis, E. coli or Staphylococcus aureus.

Signs and Symptoms of Bartholinitis

Unilateral enlargement of the vulva with redness, pain and fever.

Therapy of Bartholinitis

Antibiotics. A large empyema must be drained by incision.

Therapy of Bartholin Cyst

Marsupialization is the surgical technique of choice. After cutting a slit into the cyst, suturing of the edges forms a continuous surface from the exterior surface of the vulva to the interior of the cyst.
